The Tree: Wild tambran is a
large canopy tree, reaching to 120 feet in height and 6 feet in diameter in the natural
rainforest. It has rough bark and white dense flowers. Wild tambran is leguminous, or
nitrogen-fixing.
Status: Because of the
excellent quality and beauty of its wood, wild tambran is now rare outside of parks and
reserves.
The Wood: Wild tambran is an
excellent quality and attractive dark reddish brown wood, sometimes with bands of lighter
reddish or golden brown, and a luster similar to mahogany. It has a medium texture and its
interlocking grain often produces a ribbon figure. Wild tambran responds well to both
machine and hand tools, is easy to finish, and takes an excellent polish. Its strength is
similar to teak.
Uses: Wild tambran is used for furniture and
cabinetry, decorative and figured veneer, interior trim, turnery, sculpture, and specialty
items.
