Sequoia Awards honor 'green' products, policies

Four companies won Sequoia environmental awards from The Association of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers at this year's fair in Anaheim, Calif.
- CanFibre Group Ltd. of Riverside, Calif., won for building a factory using 100 percent urban waste to make AllGreen medium-density fiberboard (MDF). The MDF emits no formaldehyde. A second plant is planned for Lackawanna, N.Y.
- Sierra Pine Ltd. of Roseville, Calif., won for its Medex, Medite II and Medite FR formaldehyde-free MDF. The MDF board also uses recycled wood gathered from the area.
- Morton Powder Coatings of Reading, Pa., won for developing an electrostatic powder coating technology that can be used on an MDF substrate. The finishing process requires no solvents and gives off no atmospheric pollutants.
- Tropical American Tree Farms of San Isidro de El General in Costa Rica won for its conversion of six large cattle ranches (on 6,700 acres) into tropical hardwood tree farms. The trees are planted and grown under contract for harvest at maturity.

farms to grow timber under contract.
