Momento en que la Licda. Elizabeth Odio, siembra

Licda. Elizabeth Odio (Vice President of Costa Rica),
planting tree number one million, accompanied by the
manager of Campo Real, José Alberto Salazar,
Sherry and her husband, Steve Brunner.

A foreign couple arrived in our country eight years ago and started a reforestation project, with the objective of obtaining profit, development, and jobs, from nature, but caring for the environment, and on December 3rd they achieved their goal: "to plant the one millionth tree before the year 2000."

In the year 1991, Sherry and Steve Brunner started the company TATF, S. A., in an effort to carry out their ideals and principles, in the search for economically viable solutions to tropical deforestation.

For this, their company acquired farms which had been previously dedicated as pasturelands, as well as secondary and primary forests that were threatened, the pasturelands to be dedicated to commercial reforestation and the forests destined to natural conservation.

Mr. Brunner has been related with our country since the beginning of the decade of the 70's, when he noted the way in which the indiscriminate uses of the forest resources threatened the future of Costa Rican rainforests.

Through their project, he and his wife, have found an economically viable way to substitute the hardwoods being taken from the rainforests, to eliminate the previous pressure on them, and at the same time are creating jobs for some 200 persons.

The Vice President of the Republic (of Costa Rica), Licda. Elizabeth Odio, was present during this celebration, who said that not only do we have to take care of our natural riches, we have to pass them along to future generations.

"After our people, the most important resources our country has are our natural resources, and for that reason, this project of the Brunners is a stimulus of the coexistence with nature, that we have to continue," said Licda. Odio.

In turn, congressmen Orlando Báez and Jorge Eduardo Sánchez, and Horacio Alvarado of the municipality of Belén, reiterated their gratefulness to Steve and Sherry for the investment they have made in our country, and they declared that: "This great work will be the seed that will permit truly sustainable development and the hope of millions of human beings."

In 1991 they (the Brunners) only had one farm, nevertheless eight years later they have a total of 7 farms, where they have planted fine hardwoods, located between Pérez Zeledón and Osa; they have some 40 species and their short term plan is to have workshops and more protected forests.

According to the farm manager of the Campo Real farm in Barú, José Alberto Salazar Madríz, the protected area are some 4,000 hectares, (and) that they have rebuilt the natural habitat of the fauna, protecting the rainforests, regenerating reforested lands, and creating sources of employment.
